Reconstructed in Amami in 1935

Kingo Tatsuno (1854-1919) was a famous Japanese architect in meiji and taisho periods. He studied under British architect Josiah Conder. His notable buildings are Tokyo Station, the headquarters for the Bank of Japan etc. just to name a few.

The name of our ryokan “Nanten-en” derives from the plant called “nanten” (lat. nandin) which grows in Amami because of its suitable climate. In Amami, “Nanten” has been cherished as plant of luck. Their red fruits decorate our Japanese garden in winter.
